Max Storage TimeIf infectious waste is stored longer than 7 days, it must be stored at or below 40°F. Under no conditions may infectious waste be stored longer than 60 days.
Producer RegistrationRule R315-316 applies to facilities/transporters above specified quantity thresholds; infectious waste must be managed per R315-316 and treated/disposed at an approved facility.
Management PlanA written infectious waste management plan must be prepared and kept on file describing waste types/quantities, segregation/packaging/labeling, storage/transport, treatment/disposal methods, and responsible person.
LabelingContainers should be red or orange and must display the international biohazard symbol and labels such as "INFECTIOUS WASTE", "BIOMEDICAL WASTE", or "BIOHAZARD". Storage areas must be posted with biohazard warning signage.
Container StandardsUse leak-proof containers; sharps must be rigid and puncture-resistant. Storage areas must protect from the elements, be ventilated, and restricted to authorized persons.
Authorized HaulersUse compliant infectious-waste transport practices; infectious waste must not be transported with other waste unless contained in a separate fully enclosed leak-proof container or all waste is managed as infectious waste.
